Renaults contribution to firefighting efforts

In the 1920s, many fire brigades became aware of motor vehicles, replacing the horse-drawn carriages that had been used up until that point, in Germany as well as in France.

But at the time, there were only a few companies specializing in the needs and desires of fire departments. First, smaller suppliers gained a new customer base, but then the big player Renault also decided to offer this service.

Louis Renault himself realized that the fire brigade needed a modern means of transportation for firefighting, so Renault included a fire truck as standard equipment for the LO model.

As was customary at the time, Renault designed the body of the fire engine without doors or a roof, and four men could be seated on a simple double bench seat made of long strips of timber running the length of the vehicle.

Meanwhile, the driver and front passenger were able to sit as usual on the comfortably padded bench seat.

Because the seat took up too much space, the drum containing the hose was - and remained so for many years - mounted at the rear end.

Meanwhile, Renault engineers came up with a clever solution to the fixed hose, which is now mounted on the long ventes exceptionnelles front fender.
