DESCRIPTION
A two volume set of selected literary works of early nineteenth-century French author Alphonse de Lamartine.
Including three volumes:
I. Premieres Meditations Poetiques, La Mort de Socrate, published in 1857
II. Nouvelles Meditations Poetiques, Le Dernier Chant du Pelerinage dHarold, Chant du Sacre, published in 1858
III. Harmonies Meditations Poetiques Avec Commentaires et Poesies Diverses, published in 1859
Originally published in the 1820s, these works are poetical in nature, and are very much in the post-Revolutionist emotional style, evoking strong personal lyricism and grappling with the themes of life, death, and memory.
These works have been handsomely bound in full calf prize binding from Christs Hospital. Their coat of arms can be found to the front boards, and a prize bookplate to each front pastedown. There is also a library stamp and sticker to each pastedown from Christs Hospital School Library.
CONDITION
Handsomely bound in full calf prize binding, with gilt detailing to the spine and front boards. Externally, smart, with some rubbing to the joints, spines, and extremities. General shelf wear and remnants of sticker adhesive the tail of the boards. Rear joint to Meditations Poetiques is starting to the head, resulting in a small amount of lifting to the binding at the head of the joint. A few marks to the boards. Harmonies Poetiques does not include a Tome III spine label. Prize bookplate and library stamp and sticker to the front pastedown of each volume, and a library stamp to one of the front free-endpapers and title page of each volume. Internally, front hinges to Meditations Poetiques and Harmonies Poetiques are strained but firm. All volumes are firmly bound. Instances of scattered spots to the pages, though many pages do remain bright and clean.
