The color print (9 ¾ x 12 7/8 inches) of LBJ in the “President's Room” is mounted to a larger photographic matte or board (12 ½ x 16 3/8 inches in size), with Lyndon Johnson's signature and inscription below the print itself.
The photograph is neatly SIGNED by LBJ and INSCRIBED to Joe Duke, the long-time SENATE “Sergeant at Arms”. INSCRIPTION reads as follows – “To Joe Duke My efficient loyal right arm from his friend Lyndon B. Johnson”.
JOE DUKE was nominated by the Democratic majority for the position of “Sergeant of Arms” in the U.S. Senate and ratified by the full Senate on January 3rd 1949. Duke served as Sergeant at Arms until the Republicans reclaimed the Senate in 1953, when he was replaced by Forest A. Harness. With the return of a Democratic majority in January of 1955, Duke regained his former post. He was widely respected by Senators of both parties for his non-partisan approach and effective attention to his responsibilities. In all, Duke held the position from 1949-1953 and then again from 1955-1965, when he finally retired from the Senate.
PRESIDENT'S ROOM is considered one of the most ornate rooms in the U.S. Capitol building. The room was completed in 1859 during the Capitol's renovation and extension when new Senate and House wings were added to the central cast-iron dome. The room is noted for its richly adorned fresco paintings by the Italian artist Constantino Brumidi.
