We will try and itemize each piece and the buyer MUST write to us BEFORE buying this so we can determine which items will be included? So many buyers want just the Top Hat and NOT the leather case or accessories. So that's why these options will help buyers decide what they want to buy.
Currently the price of this includes EVERYTHING EXCEPT that Black Shawl that's worn around the neck to keep warm. Dad still has his 1920s, Handed Down from his Father Tuxedo, they were called “CUT OUT” back then. It was Custom Made by a Tailor and Dad is considering selling it now? If you are at all interested please write to us and I will talk once again to Dad and see if he's ready to sell it? It's till in Excellent condition. It has the LONG tail on the Jacket.
The color of this hat is all BLACK.
Typical Top Hats (Post 1920s or 1930s) measured 5 to 5.4 inches, only the Older ones will measure 5.7 inches to 6.2 inches! This one measures 6 inches tall!
The very early ones pre-1920 would measure up to 6.4 inches. We have added a picture at the very end showing Dad's personal collection of Top Hats that is part of our families history. Each one has its own story and will remain in the family! If you look closely 2 of the 1890-1910 leather top cases contains a “Beaver” Top Hat and the top cover of the leather case contains a Silk Collapsible Top Hat. Those were the days! The other 2 Leather Cases each contain a single “Beaver” Top Hat. These Hat were all over 5.8 to 6.2 inches tall. We will try and add a picture of his collection if there is still room in the picture gallery or you may write to us to see the others?
Since we (dad and I) are having lots of trouble dating this we looked at a couple of dad's own personal Top Hats. Dad believes this is from the 1890 to 1910? but if you have any better information please write to us. This was stored for over a 100 years in that T TOP Leather Travel Case!
If you look at the top of this Top Hat you will see that it has a vent hole!
Also this has an ACTUAL GROSGRAIN Ribbon! Not a Felt Band. See pictures.
These details are a great way to date this Top Hat!
Thank you to one of Dad's hat collectors for helping us determine the Dating of this hat! THANK YOU!
So we found a bit of wear on this Top Hat and on the hat! Leather sweatband is completely and securely attached to the hat! Still soft and pliable, with NO breaks or cracks! There is a tiny wrinkle on the crown, it's not terrible and folks will be seeing this whole hat and will just overlook any minor issues. For a Hat that's well over 100 years old, it's really a SHOW PIECE! There are no loose thread on the bound edge. And the end of the Bow on the grosgrain ribbon has some loose threads. One of Dads hat collectors say this can be trimmed off and stitched up to look much better by any decent tailor. Dad no longer has his Good Old Friend & Tailor anymore to take hats to for repair. Hat liner itself is intact and a bit soiled, nothing terrible at all though, just starting to get that yellowish patina. Just an excellent Top Hat!

Ok for the material? If you are not familiar with these old top hats and material they are made from. First of all, the last of the actual Beaver top hats (made from beaver) were made before 1830 or near about that period. They stopped making Beaver top hats because of the expense and lack of beaver. The Top Hats made post 1830s used a much less expensive and more available material called “Plush Silk”. It was much easier to work with and manufacturer. If you actually ever find a real BEAVER top hat we strongly suggest buying it without question! There are NOT a many survivors!
This was worn and appears to have been worn more than a handful of times before storing it away. See pictures! We took pictures of every angle so you can see every detail. We hid NOTHING! If you have any questions please write to us.
So we actually measure each hat 3 times using different methods.
This measures to 7-1/8++ measures 22-1/2+ inches. These Tops Hats do not stretch!
A Perfect 7-1/8 is 22-3/8 inches and a Perfect 7-1/4 is 22-3/4 inches, this is a fraction under a perfect 7-1/4.
So when we tried to use that Metal Hat Sizer and because this hat has NO give, the hat stretcher was NOT able to conform completely to the hat! There was a bit of a space at a few spots where the metal did NOT go completely again the leather sweatband. We hope we are explaining this well? So it is slightly larger than what the picture is showing.
Since we measure this using other methods we can say this is just a fraction under a Perfect 7-1/4 by about less than an 1/8 of an inch.
We did NOT a want to force that Metal Hat Sizer to conform to the hat, afraid of breaking the leather sweatband. It just didn't seem like a good idea to do that! After all these years we just didn't want to take any chances. So we added the inside measurements of the actual head hole. These measurements are within a fraction, we always do our very best!
You will need to know these measurements so you can tell if this hat is going to fit your head shape. It's really not hard to measure. My Grandson says there are plenty of details on the Internet on how to measure your head size.
If you are at all familiar with how to wear a Top Hat, they were worn to just below the hair line, NOT in the middle of the forehead. If you wear a Perfect 7-1/4, this will fit perfectly where it is suppose to be worn, right at the front of the hairline.
And if you wear a 7-1/8 it will fit down below the center of the forehead, all depending on you head shape. It could be a bit loose but using felt hat reducers will fix that.

NOTE: when we ship Dad's hats out we use strong shipping boxes and each hat we ship is FULLY INSURED and we are no longer going to handle broken box insurance claims. We discovered that one buyer crushed their shipping box and asked for a hefty partial refund. The shipper sent us a picture of the box sitting at the front door and it was NOT CRUSHED? We also discovered that because we were NOT in possession of the box it was impossible for us to file the claim. So now and in the future all claims will be handled by the buyer of the hat or item we ship. Again we ALWAYS carefully pack each hat so it will not be crushed in a good strong shipping box. There are always some Bad Apples around who make everyone's life impossible! It not fair to the rest of the GOOD FOLKS but it's a fact of life these days! If you have any questions please write to us. Thank you for your understanding.
