Lee Ritenour blazes in CAPTAIN FINGERS. Sons of Champlin singer goes off in “Isnt She Lovely” as does Lee on guitar. “Space Glide” is a catchy rhythmic tune with a great sax solo and great guitar work. “Margarita” and “Fly By Night” are very melodic guitar tunes with lots of creative changes. The rhythm section is tight and the guitar playing is awesome. The sax and keyboards just make it a more tasty blend of music. All the musicians are skilled pros. Recommended to jazz/rock guitar fans.

FESTIVAL - GRPDIGITAL ORIGINAL 1988 MASTERED LP - (small cut out on jacket)

This is a truly fine release which hipped a lot of people to MPB. The DDD recording is absolutely perfect and the musicianship superb! Caetano Velosos voice,entering halfway through the verse on his magnificent Voce e Linda, or Linda as it is called on this release, still causes a lump in my throat. Joao Boscos perfomance is stellar as well.

How cool was Rit to be playing with the great Carlinhos Brown in 1988?

Lee Ritenours "Earth Run" is one of those albums that grows on you with each listen. For a modern listener, the abundance of synthesizers and the so-trendy cover art may be a little off-putting (thats a synthaxe hes holding, yall) but the overall quality is excellent with apperances by, among others, Phil Perry, Tom Scott, Abe Laboriel, Carlos Vega, and Maurice White, along with the always impressive Mr. Ritenour.

The title track is inspired, as are the last four tracks on the album. Even "If Im Dreamin" is not a bad listen. Keep in mind that 1986 (the year of the albums release) was slightly different than today, and the excesses of the period will eventually fade, leading to a vastly enjoyable album.

"Creatively, Lee Ritenour has had his ups and downsover the years. Many of the guitarists commercial pop-jazz efforts have wastedhis skills as an improviser; when Ritenour is catering to NAC/smooth jazzradio, improvisation is the usually the first thing to go. But when Ritenourdoes have a chance to stretch out, he can be an appealing improviser. Althoughquite accessible, Rits House is among his more memorable and substantialefforts. From one of his first sessions at 16 with the Mamas and Papas to accompanying Lena Horne and Tony Bennett at 18, Lee Ritenours forty year career is highlighted by a Grammy Award win for his 1986 collaboration with Dave Grusin, Harlequin; 17 Grammy nominations; numerous No 1 spots in guitar polls and the prestigious "Alumnus of the Year" award from USC.

Growing up in L.A. in the 60s, Grammy award winning guitarist Lee Ritenour has recorded more than 40 albums, with 35 chart songs, notably the Top 15 hit "Is It You," which has become a contemporary jazz radio classic. In the 90s, Ritenour was a founding member of Fourplay, the most successful band in contemporary jazz, with keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East and drummer Harvey Mason.

Rit is his 1981 album, recorded with a number of industry greats, including Weather Reports Alex Acuna, Bill Champlin (of 70s San Francisco Rock group The Sons Of Champlin, as well as Chicago), drummer Harvey Mason and Toto rhythm master Jeff Porcaro.

For Lee Ritenour, there arent many firsts left toachieve. During his dazzling five-decade career, the fabled LA guitarist hastaken his music to the outer limits, alighting on every genre and occupyingevery position in the rock n roll firmament. Hes been an enfant terrible of70s fusion, a crossover star of the 80s pop chart, an honorary exponent ofBrazilian jazz, and the fingers behind 90s supergroup, Fourplay. Ritenoursaccolades include: 45 albums,16 Grammy nominations, Alumnus of the year at USC,Los Angeles Jazz Society Honoree (2019), plus thousands of sessions withlegends such as Frank Sinatra, Pink Floyd, B.B. King and Tony Bennett, amongothers. And yet, when he checks the rear-view mirror, the 68-year-oldacknowledges hes never made a record like Dreamcatcher.

"People have been telling me for years: Rit, you gottamake a solo guitar record. In the past, Ive always been the band guy, theensemble guy, the collaborative-guitar-player guy. So this was the one projectI hadnt done. And this year, I knew it was time."

Weaving tapestries of instrumental guitar and conjuringeclectic moods, the 12 tracks of Dreamcatcher rank amongst the most melodic andtinglingly beautiful in Ritenours catalogue. But theres a power and purposehere, too, hinting at the darker circumstances that sparked this new record.

"Our house and my studio in Malibu, California burntdown in 2018," he recalls. "About 100 of my guitars went up in thefire, plus 40 amps, lots of music, the history of my whole career, pretty much.A week after the fire, I went to the hospital, which Id never had to dobefore, for surgery to replace an aortic valve. So those incidents and thesupport from my family and friends absolutely went into this music. Making thisrecord was a life-saver for me."
