A scarce first edition.
Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, and with a facsimile plate of Joness writing to the rear. Collated, complete.
A memoir of the life and work of the philologist Sir William Jones.
Spending much of his life in India and South East Asia, Jones became a scholar of ancient India. In 1784 he founded the Asiatic Society, which invited many British ex-patriots living in Calcutta to join the pursuit of Asian studies. One of the main roles of the society included the collections and documentation of ancient Indian manuscripts. Jones was an important figure in the field of British Asian study.
With the bookplates of Alan Carr, and the armorial bookplate of William Davies Adams to the front pastedown, and the contemporary inscription of Eliza Adams, dated 1805, to the title page head.
Written and compiled by John Shore, 1st Baron Teignmouth. A close friend of Jones, Shores sympathetically explores the life and work of this philologist and judge.
